Super Cities №225—Get it Together, America

Brendan Hart

Guess what? #FaceApp is trending! You can use the app's filters to see what you will look like as an older person. How cool!

But wait. Did you read FaceApp's privacy policy? Did you know that it can access your photos, browsing history, and location? Did you know that the Saint Petersburg-based company will share your information with "third-party partners"? Did you know that photo apps are valuable because they use facial recognition to train artificial intelligence?

No? No one told you?

It's past time that Americans start using their big brains.

Start here:

Six companies distributed 56 billion opioid pills between 2006 and 2012. 47,000 Americans died of an opioid overdose in 2017.

81% of Americans own smartphones. Two-thirds of Americans would fail the citizenship test.

19% of Americans approve of Congress. Only 41% of Americans voted in the 2014 mid-term elections.

Americans troops have deployed to war fifteen times. Seventy-one percent of young Americans are ineligible to serve in the military.

In 2017, 47,000 Americans committed suicide. Half used one of the country's       393,000,000 civilian guns.

Ninety-three million Americans are obese. Only 5% of American adults do thirty minutes of physical activity each day.

Climate change has cost the US government $350 billion over the last decade. Only 31% of Americans say that climate change affects them personally.

If we want to be great, we have to act great.

Get it together, America.
